Olympus

Well, Bushiroad finally went and made Olympus its very own archetype with the introduction of an Olympus-only card. I've moved everything Olympus related from Wydar Sarkal in the expectation that Bushiroad does not leave us hanging and do more for this archetype. In the meanwhile, much of what can be said for Wydar Sarkal applies to Olympus: you get plusses from calling Gorgon stuff and activating Double Attack and/or Penetrate.

Gorgon Three Sisters, Euryale
I'm not even a freaking
Gorgon
We can take some time to view the Gorgon Three Sisters, a subclass of Olympus and Wydar Sarkal that synergize with each other quite well. There are currently three sisters: Euryale, Medusa, and Stheno. Euryale is the Size 2, and the reason that Gorgons actually kinda work. She gets Double Attack on a 5000/2 body as long as there's another Gorgon on the field. Luckily, the other two sisters are both Size 1's so you have 8 possible targets for the Double Attack. When she does get the Double Attack, she ends up being a wash (-0.5 stats, 1 gauge cost for +1). But you know the drill with Double Attack on Size 2 (Bladewing Phoenix): it's always freaking worth it.

Gorgon Three Sisters, Medusa
Look into mah eyes...
Medusa is really interesting. Her vanilla stats are somehow higher than they should be...by 1000 defense. Surprisingly, that extra bit of defense helps keep her alive more often than not; remember, Euryale needs her alive. Her on-play effect is a bit problematic. Don't get me wrong, it's amazing - discard one card to destroy all Size 1's on your opponent's field. That's a potential 1 for 3. But the card you have to discard must be a Gorgon, and the fact there are only 12 Gorgons in existence at the moment means that you really don't want to be using Medusa's ability and reduce the number of Gorgons you have to use.

And then there's Stheno. She's a 3000/1/6000 vanilla. Really funny since you're actually going to be calling her to the side, and that means that your opponent is going to be wasting a 6000 power attack on a 1-crit vanilla on the side. Holy Grail anyone?

Golden Blade, Chrysaon
Cape = awesome
Luckily, there's a few more than just these 12 cards for the Gorgon build. Euryale has another Size 2 helper in Golden Blade, Chrysaon. Let's overlook his 1000 defense (because this screws up his stat calculations) and see his effect: 5000/3 with Penetrate. For free! As long as you have 3+ Gorgons in the drop. I'm just joking about overlooking defense, I calculate everything anyways. Considering that 5000/3/4000 would be the vanilla 3-crit Size 2, Chrysaon loses 3000 defense (-0.75). But for Penetrate. With 3-crit. That's easily +1.5 for free, as long as you can get Gorgons in the drop. What does Medusa's effect do? Oh yeah, help you win while discarding Gorgons. The synergy is pretty sweet.

I just want to say that Colossal Sea Monster, Cetus sounds and looks extremely disturbing. It's a really good card, though, Penetrate 4-crit for 2 gauge is worth it any day, especially with Breathen Gard.

Perfect Pack one gives us another legendary beast of Greek mythos, the Golden Lion of Nemea. For those of you who suck at mythology, this is the lion with the superarmor hide that Heracles kills and skins. Anyways, this lion is pretty broke since it searches out a card for only 1 gauge, which means it plusses like mad. You can only search Olympus monsters but what the hell, Medusa is basically a field wipe spell. Even better, turn 1 you can play him and search himself for a sick tutor loop that's honestly hard to beat.

Twin-Headed Hellhound, Orthus
Woof woof
Starting of the new season and the new series, Hundred Booster gives us Twin-Headed Hellhound, Orthus. I actually quite like this card. For 1 gauge, you get the ability to kill a monster or item if you deal damage with the card. Scary. With all the new Transform and Ride mechanics, Orthus simply doesn't give any and wipes your opponent's advantages. Sure, it can be a risky call and get negated and whatnot, but the pressure is there and, being a Size 2, Orthus gets hit less by counter removal than Size 1 pressure columns that attempt the same thing (Deathgaze, etc).

Besides doggy, we get some vanillas. We need more Size 1's though...thankfully, most Stars are also Olympus so that's a bonus.

  1. Hey Blaise, I did some research of my own and found out that different worlds have different vanillas. Legend World Size 2 monsters are at the same level with Dungeon World Size 2 monsters. 6000/2/5000, or 5000/3/3000 Also, as for Zaltrog....Well, it seems one gauge takes 3000 of his power or defense. 2 would take away 6000 instead....For Odd Bird, Harpy however, her lost in stats for just 1 gauge is only 2000.

Refer to the Vanilla Stats article and tell me if the math there needs some updating or not
